About
The Trust Steward
A Philosophy First
Most governance failures are not failures of intelligence or strategy. They are failures of trust architecture — the invisible systems that determine whether an organisation behaves with integrity when no one is watching, communicates honestly when the news is bad, and holds its course when stakeholders are hostile.
I spent almost five decades as a CEO and board director discovering this the hard way. The crises I navigated — hostile takeovers, environmental disasters, workplace fatalities, major project failures, cross-cultural governance in international joint ventures — taught me that the leaders who survived them well were not the smartest or the most experienced. They were the ones who had built, deliberately and structurally, a culture of trust that held under pressure.
I call the systematic approach to doing this Trust Stewardship. It has three pillars: Ethical Stewardship, Operational Stewardship, and Crisis Stewardship. Everything I publish, teach, and advise on flows from this framework.
The work is not about telling people how to run their organisations. It is about sharing what forty years of leading at the highest level has taught me about what actually works — and what looks good until the moment it doesn't.
The Career
My executive career was built in infrastructure, ports, and energy — sectors where the consequences of poor governance are measured not in spreadsheet variances but in lives, communities, and billions of dollars of capital.
CEO Roles
Port of Brisbane Corporation — one of Australia's largest and most complex port operations, managing major infrastructure investment, environmental stewardship, and multi-stakeholder relationships across government, industry, and community.
Port Wellington Limited, New Zealand — led the organisation through significant operational and cultural transformation during a period of substantial change in New Zealand's port sector.
Cross-City Motorway — a $1 billion public-private partnership in distress with $600 million in debt across seventeen international banking institutions, requiring sophisticated stakeholder and financial risk management.
Executive Chairman
Chalmers Ltd (ASX-listed) — executive chairman of a publicly listed company, navigating the disciplines of listed entity governance alongside operational leadership.
Current Board Roles
Director, Bellamy's Australia — governance of an Australian infant nutrition company owned by China Mengniu Dairy, operating across complex cross-cultural board dynamics and international regulatory environments.
Director, Nebras Power Australia — governance of a Qatari-backed renewable energy business, advising on Australian market strategy and investment risk.
Former Board Roles
Non-Executive Director, an ASX Top 100 company — served from IPO through the Global Financial Crisis, providing governance continuity through the transition to public markets and one of the most severe capital-markets shocks in a generation.
Advisory
Transaction Risk Advisor — Retained by international financial underwriters and debt providers to assess transaction risk on major infrastructure and energy deals in Australia and New Zealand.
Buy-Side Advisory — Retained on the buy-side advisory team for one of New Zealand's largest companies across three separate transactions.
M&A Advisory — Involved in the sale of a listed oil company to a major Chinese conglomerate.
Education
I serve as an ambassador for the Veblen Directors Programme, hosting a confidential monthly Boardroom Breakdown webinar for a worldwide network of current and aspiring directors. It is unpaid — the value to me is the network and standing it brings — and I encourage directors who are serious about the craft to join.
"Scale changes. Human nature doesn't. The same trust failures that destroy a Fortune 500 company destroy a family business. The frameworks work at every level."
